Approx 85% of people in PNG live on their ancestral land with an acute lack of facilities as are available to people in developed countries. When in labour, the mother has 3 options;
a; To travel into town on the PMV [People Moving Vehicle] which operates mostly once in the morning and again once in the evening/ IF one is available in the village.
b; To seek the assistance of a trained VBA [Village Birth Assistant] IF one is located in the village.
c; To walk approx 2 hours towards help – and face the possibility of delivering her baby on the side of the road.
A Birthing Bundle gives the mother or the VBA a means of the “tools of trade” to do the job.
Each pregnant mother in remote villages is given a Birthing Bundle in readiness for her delivery.
